WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 033112

It was determined that embers from a CAL FIRE debris burn conducted in December sparked the 15-acre Lawler Fire in Southern California's San Jacinto Mountains in January (1); while two cousins admitted accidentally starting Arizona's 538,000-acre Wallow Fire and will face jail terms of one year each, along with a $10,000 fine (2). As firefighters battling Colorado's 4,140-acre Lower North Fork Fire reached 70% containment, record heat in the forecast could doom plans for 100% containment by Sunday (3); even as a "blame game" broke out between a reverse 911 company and Jefferson County officials over a number of missed evacuation phone calls (4); while friends and family held a memorial service to honor an elderly couple who died trying to escape the wildfire (5); but a smaller cousin to the Lower North Fork Fire has been contained in Teller County (6). A Texas firefighter from Hamby Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with wildfire arson (7); and Washington County Superior Court sentenced a volunteer firefighter from Maine Forest Service for lighting a string of arson wildfires across the state last July (8). Canadian utility Telus was ordered by British Columbia's Supreme Court to pay the provincial government $2.1 million for a 300-hectare forest fire sparked by a tree falling against their power lines in 2006 (9). The threat wildfires pose to Ireland's population is examined by the next article (10); while in England, Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service warned that there was an elevated wildfire threat until rain arrives on Tuesday (11). Numerous wildfires were reported across Spain and Portugal (12); but a wildfire which scorched 840 ha, including land in India's Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, has finally been brought under control (13). Wildfire NOTD subscriber David Cant, Aviation Services Manager for South Australia's Country Fire Service, discusses that organization's readiness to fight bushfires from the air in the next article (14). And finally, a cautionary tale from San Bernardino, California, underscores the importance of checking credentials on firefighters before trusting them!
