WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 010811

Arizona's Kaibab National Forest will be conducting debris pile burns next week (1); while New Mexico's Gila National Forest is beginning tryouts for seasonal firefighters (2). Boulder County, Colorado, is soliciting input from the public on their new Community Wildfire Protection Plan (3); but a number of wildfires were reported in the metropolitan Oklahoma City region yesterday (4); and grass fires in Texas also caused a power outage (5). A warning about the hazard of dumping ashes containing live embers is provided to residents of Asheville, North Carolina, in the next item (6); this at a time when the 325th Fighter Wing Natural Resources Flight will be conducting over 700 acres of controlled burns at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida (7). An Israeli counsel general thanked residents of the southwestern United States for generous donations after the devastating wildfire outside of Haifa in December (8); but a new wildfire has been reported in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan, where a 30,000-acre wildfire burned just a week ago (9). An Australian book about the Black Saturday bushfires will provide funding for survivors being aided by Salvation Army’s Victorian Bushfire Appeal (10). And finally, a Daytona Beach, Florida, firefighter could get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars without having to work another day for the fire department!
