WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 040212

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State Forestry, reported a 100-acre wildfire east of Capitan (1). Over 500 firefighters have brought containment of Colorado's Lower North Fork Fire to 97%, allowing evacuees to return home (2); which is a nice change from the memories of a firefighter with Inter-Canyon Fire Rescue who recalls seeing people fleeing the fire just days ago (3); followed by an Op-Ed piece that discusses how wildfires get started (4). Gov. Perry will be delivering an opening statement at the first Texas Emergency Management Conference today (5); while USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service will be providing wildfire aid to Marion and Cass counties (6). The next article takes a look at South Dakota Wildland Fire Suppression Division's plans to prepare for the summer wildfire season (7); where a wildfire that burned 546 acres in the Black Hills National Forest has finally been contained (8); however, a new 10-acre blaze has been reported northwest of Custer (9). Wyoming's Teton Interagency Fire announced that it would be conducting controlled burns on 600 acres of timber (10); the next article taking a closer look at Montana-based Wildfire Defense Services, a private firefighting company funded by Chubb Insurance in 14 states (11). Officials in Kentucky are concerned about an uptick in wildfire activity in Wayne and Clinton counties (12). The current elevated wildfire danger across Pennsylvania can be traced to an unusually dry winter season (13); while Southeastern Pennsylvania, most of New Jersey and all of Delaware are faced with the dilemma of fire and ice (14). Officials from the Maine Forest Service reflected on how best to protect property from increasingly frequent wildfires (15). A pair of forest fires burned 170 acres in Southern France, closing the road between Bergerac and Périgueux (16); and wildfire activity in India's Dhenkanal region is the focus of the next article (17); followed by one about wildfires in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan (18). Although the bushfire season is barely over in Victoria, Australia, Country Fire Authority firefighters will be knocking on doors in East Gippsland to remind homeowners to prepare for bushfires next season (19); and art imitates life in a play which re-creates the days following Black Saturday (20). A bushfire which started in South Australia's Deep Creek Conservation Park as a controlled burn has now scorched 260 ha (21). And finally, Wildfire NOTD subscriber Walt Darren, Safety Committee Chairman for the Associated Aerial Firefighters, sent along an item from Wildfire Today on April Fools Day which makes you wonder: truth or hoax?
