The impact of several factors, including wildfires, is highlighted by a series of trend maps released by the Oregon Department of Forestry (1). Officials in New Mexico's Gila National Forest warned citizens throughout the state of the continued wildfire danger (2); something emphasized by a 1,780-acre wildfire that forced the evacuation of 800 homes in Silver City (3); where three firefighters suffered minor injuries (4); Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State forestry, discussing how FEMA will pay 75% of the suppression cost of the fire in the next article (5). Firefighters in Eastern Oklahoma battled a grass fire as wildfire danger remained high throughout the region (6); a situation not helped by erratic weather (7). Dry, windy weather is leading to extreme wildfire danger in the Texas Panhandle which could last until the weekend (8); prompting Texas Forest Service to staff up a base in Midland in preparation for wildfires (9); even as air-tankers and heavy equipment were dispatched to battle a 67-acre wildfire in Nolan County (10). The Florida Fire Chief’s Association hosted a silent auction to raise funds for volunteer fire departments in sore need of wildfire-fighting equipment in the Panhandle (11); but as the Iron Horse Fire entered the mop-up stage, smoke drifting across a nearby highway caused a fatal five-car pile up (12); and the firefighter who was injured battling the blaze is interviewed in the next article (13). Israel's plans to build an aerial firefighting force are updated in the next item (14). Over 1,000 personnel were grappling with a new 26-hectare wildfire in southern China's Yunnan Province (15); while a wildfire was reported near Winlock Reserve Forest in Southern India (16). Two men accused of starting a 400-acre wildfire outside of Khasadraphu, Bhutan, are being held for questioning (17); and the next article delves into reasons behind wildfires in Thailand, highlighting the Royal Forest Department's efforts to reduce them (18). As bushfire hazard season draws to a close, Australia Capital Territory Parks and Conservation Service is beginning controlled burns (19). Victoria's Country Fire Authority expected to have an out-of-control prescribed burn back under control today (20); and to reduce the bushfire danger, Municipal Association of Victoria and Country Fire Authority have allocated an additional $11.3 million to spur hiring of bushfire workers in several shires (21). A panic attack is being blamed for a man lighting a signal fire in South Australia's Englebrecht Reserve which wreaked havoc in 2009 (22); but on the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, a fire manager in New South Wales' Kosciusko National Park is encouraging women to sign up as environmental managers (23). And finally, a Virginia volunteer firefighter is in hot water after taking his fire truck on a drunken joyride this past weekend!
