A post-op evaluation of Colorado's Lower North Fork Fire shows that faulty communications, outdated topography maps, and the lack of a controlled burn plan were major factors in the early days of the fire (3); where a 35-year veteran from Bighorn National Forest in Wyoming has been charged with evaluating the response to the fire (4). In Boise, Idaho, the National Interagency Fire Center reported 74 wildfires burning across the US as the warm, dry winter spawns an unusual number of early-season wildfires (5); and Oklahoma City firefighters, who battled over 1,000 wildfires last year, are providing useful tips for homeowners to protect themselves against future wildfires (6). A new documentary titled "The Lookout" profiles a fire lookout on Montana's Flathead National Forest (7); while the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources offers some useful tips to homeowners on how to prepare for wildfires in the next article (8). A two-acre wildfire was sparked by improperly disposed ashes outside of New Sharon, Maine (9); even as New Hampshire and Massachusetts announced burn bans due to drought conditions coupled with high winds (10). Smoke from wildfires in Florida's Ocala National Forest prompted officials in Marion County to briefly close some roads (11); and as Wildfire Awareness Week approaches, Florida Forest Service personnel are reminding residents of the wildfire danger (12). Firefighting helicopters were pressed into service in Moscow, Russia, to battle a fire atop an uncompleted skyscraper (13); followed by an article sent along by Wildfire NOTD subscriber Walt Darran, Safety Committee Chairman for the Associated Aerial Firefighters, about the Israeli Air Force's grounding of its aerial firefighting fleet after the crash of one of the aircraft last week (14). Officials have limited tourist access to India's Ranni Forest due to the extreme wildfire danger (15). Wildfires in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan have burned thousands of acres (16); while neighboring Nepal is using satellite data provided by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development to track forest fires (17). Heading to Australia, Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officials fear that the next bushfire season could be the worst in years (18); while South Australia's Country Fire Service is trying to be flexible about the dates of the official start/stop of bushfire season (19). And finally, firefighters in Albuquerque, New Mexico, found a good use for their lottery winnings: helping a fellow firefighter facing expensive cancer surgery!
