An Op-Ed piece from San Diego County, California, bashes the Legislature for the $150 fire tax which is impacting rural homeowners (1); but New Mexico's Gila National Forest will be kicking off its annual Southwest Forest Fire Fighter recruitment program December 17th (2). Despite the destruction done by wildfires in Colorado this past summer, Pike National Forest is still able to observe a tradition of selling live Christmas trees (3); while Idaho State University's Geographic Information System Training and Research Center has received a $180,000 grant from NASA to provide software which will aid rehabilitation of areas scorched by wildfires this year (4). It appears that Nebraska's destructive fire season is not quite done, as a new wildfire was reported in Custer County (5). Wildfires continue to crop up in East Tennessee, some of them apparently sparked by arsonists, as the next two articles show (6)(7); dry, windy conditions forcing the suspension of burn permits across Northeast Tennessee (8). Mining operations apparently sparked wildfires in Malaysia's Raja Musa Forest Reserve (9). Heading to Australia, bushfire sirens will be sounding off as part of a test in the vicinity of Queensland's Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious (10); while in New South Wales, Wollondilly Council and the Wollondilly Rural Fire Service teamed up to produce a short film in hopes of getting residents to formulate a bushfire survival plan (11). Fire crews outside of Coomunga, South Australia, continued to battle a 2,200-hectare bushfire (12). Seventeen bushfires in Western Australia have scorched 5,600 ha (13); where the tourism impact of the bushfires that roared through Augusta-Margaret River last year is examined by the next article (14); but as summer approaches, some are questioning whether there will be enough firefighters to battle the inevitable bushfires (15). And finally, firefighters were victorious over police officers in St. Louis, Missouri's, 26th annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses competition! Happy Thanksgiving to all our US readers!
