Wildfire NOTD subscriber Chuck Bushey, Past President of the International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along a link to an assessment of living with wildfire in the western regional US (1). A Red Flag warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for parts of Southern California due to dry, windy conditions (2); where goats are doing their part to reduce the wildfire danger in the Santa Barbara foothills (3). The next article takes a look at the impact Arizona's Four Forest Restoration Initiative will have on ponderosa pine forests along the Mogollon Rim (4); but after hundreds of wildfires burned 600,000 acres across Wyoming, the suppression bill totaled up to $42 million for the year (5). Shorter days and cooler weather have allowed US Forest Service to ease fire restrictions on the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands (6); while a wind-driven wildfire blazed across 250 acres in Wisconsin's Lake Mills State Wildlife Area (7). West Virginia Division of Forestry tallied up a total of 42 wildfires that scorched 800 acres over the Veterans Day weekend (8); including a 150-acre blaze in Mercer County (9). The only survivor of a North Carolina-based military C-130 which crashed in South Dakota fighting wildfires this summer shares his story of that crash in the next article (10); while US Forest Service is planning to conduct 3,700 acres of controlled burns in McDowell County (11). Florida Forest Service is hoping that a soaking wet rainy season translates into less wildfire activity during the dry season (12); allowing Ocala National Forest to begin 71,000 acres of controlled burns (13); and wildland fire training to go foward in St. Lucie County (14). A small bushfire was reported in Nelson, New Zealand (15); while in Australia, a bushfire reported on Queensland's Bribie Island has been brought under control (16). South Australia’s Country Fire Service says it could take until next week to determine the cause of an 1,800-hectare bushfire on the Eyre Peninsula which destroyed numerous structures (17); but in the meantime, property owners are lobbying for more latitude in clearing vegetation to protect their homes from bushfires (18); while a koala bear who survived the fire has been flown to Adelaide for emergency burn treatment (19). A former Australian model who was badly burned by a bushfire while running a marathon near Kimberley, Western Australia, has been awarded £300,000 in compensation (20); but a lack of fire mitigation along Tasmania's West Coast has homeowners worried as bushfire season approaches (21). And finally, an award for saving several animals from the High Park Fire in Colorado was given to an unlikely recipient: a donkey named Ellie!
