The National Weather Service has issued Red Flag warnings for Southern California's interior counties for Sunday (1); while Lassen National Forest will be conducting a tour of the Chips Fire burn area November 14th (2). US Forest Service's Pacific Northwest Research Station has found that mountain meadows are dwindling in the Pacific Northwest, in part due to fire suppression (3). A University of Oregon study disclosed that local economies benefit from wildfire suppression efforts (4); just not in the local tourism business (5). Kittitas County Historical Museum and Humanities Washington will be presenting a free program entitled "Fire and Forests, East of the Cascade Divide" on November 7th (6); while an editorial discusses the benefits of the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program to forest health in that state (7). The sixth annual Nevada Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Summit is being labeled a success by the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (8). A landscaper from Arizona discusses the problem with weeds in the Schultz Fire burn area (9); while the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest will conduct controlled burns over the next two weeks time (10). Pack trains of mules are bringing endangered Gila trout back to their watering holes in the Gila National Forest after they were evacuated during wildfires there this summer (11). Despite the fact that November has arrived, wildfires continue to burn in Colorado (12); prompting smoke advisories for La Plata County (13); meanwhile, a Coloradan whose weed burning started a wildfire in 2011 will be responsible for paying $14,961.98 to the Bureau of Land Management to cover suppression costs (14); even as volunteers go about reseeding areas burned by the High Park Fire (15); and Routt County fire officials count their lucky stars that the wildfire season was not worse than it actually was (16). With 90 counties still under burn bans, Texas Forest Service has warned outdoorsmen to refrain from open fires (17). An official from Montana's Bitterroot National Forest takes a look at the costs associated with that state's busy fire season (18); but now that the wildfires are out, fire crews are heading to the East Coast to help clean up after Hurricane Sandy (19). As if New Jersey didn't already have enough problems in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, power lines sparked a wildfire in Bridgewater (20); and after a few small fires over the past week or so, Florida Forest Service is warning homeowners that they need to prepare for fire season (21). A 39,540-acre wildfire which has been burning near Timmins, Ontario, Canada, since May is finally out (22); while on the island of Borneo in the Far East, smoke from peat fires is limiting visibility for motorists (23). The author of a prize-winning book on Australia's fire history discusses the virtues of letting bushfires burn freely (24); but the communities of Cleveland and Redland Bay have been put on evacuation alert by the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (25); while a lack of rain coupled with hot winds has New South Wales' Rural Fire Service seeing conflagrations in Bathurst region's future (26). And finally, firefighters in Arizona had to perform a tricky extrication: extracting hikers from a swarm of bees!
