WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 082908

Only a few items in the news about wildfires today, leading off, for a change, with international fires, first from Italy, where several dozen wildfires are burning, followed by good news from Macedonia, where they are finally roping in their wildfires. Worried fire officials in northern California were watching the winds to see if a couple of wildfires nearly under control would get loose again, while wildfires near Redding and Anderson have flared up again. Hawaiian authorities have apprehended a young arsonist, and local merchants count the cost to business from the Gunbarrel Fire. Utah is still having problems with wildfires as the Porcupine and Split Top 1 fires sprinted through Moab and Vernal. A follow-on article gives more details on the Porcupine Fire. Meanwhile, a small wildfire is burning near Fort Dix in New Jersey, and the source of a wildfire in Idaho that caused one death has been traced to a loose jump cable (something folks in San Diego County can relate to).
