WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 120312

A new report from industry research firm IBISWorld revealed that the Private Firefighting Services industry has seen an upward spike in revenue as state and federal fire agencies reduce personnel (1). The International Association of Wildland Fire sent along their latest Fire Research News update (2); while the California Fire Science Consortium, sent along their December newsletter (3). In San Diego County, California, Sempra Energy Foundation's $5 million in philanthropy is being contrasted with San Diego Gas & Electric's efforts to recover $369 million in wildfire-related expenses (4); but a new 1% sales tax will be levied by the state on lumber and "engineered" wood products to provide funds for, among other things, wildland firefighting (5). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State Forestry, discusses the efforts of inmate crews to reduce the wildfire danger during record high temperatures in the next article (6). Despite gusty winds, containment lines held Colorado's Fern Lake Fire to 4,400 acres (7); even as a new blaze destroyed a cabin near Red Feather Lakes (8); and a homeowner in Routt County got a harsh reminder of how easy it is to accidentally spark a wildfire (9); meanwhile, a suspected fake firefighter pleaded not guilty in court (10). A trio of wildfires have been reported in South Dakota's Black Hills (11); and Hazard, Kentucky, lived up to its name as a 600-acre wildfire threatened homes over the weekend (12). A wildfire in McDowell County, West Virginia, was quickly brought under control by volunteer firefighters (13); but following 73 wildfires that burned over 1,000 acres in November, Virginia Department of Forestry has extended the fall fire season until December 10th (14). The Canadian federal government refused to alter construction codes to better protect communities from destructive wildfires (15); while India will be using satellite surveillance to get a jump on bushfires in the northern state of Mizoram (16). Heading to Australia, Victoria's Fire Services Commissioner discusses the bushfire season ahead in the next article (17); while Country Fire Authority's chief officer said that, for the first time since 2009, Victoria is facing a "real fire season" (18); and in Queensland, authorities fear this could be the worst bushfire season in a decade (19). An article from New South Wales discusses how more modern building materials can help prevent fires from destroying homes (20); while a primary school in Bremer Bay, Western Australia, was forced to close for two days due to a nearby bushfire (21). Helicopters were brought in to help fight an 8,000-hectare bushfire burning in Tasmania's Central Highlands (22). And finally, a Texas volunteer firefighter whose home was destroyed in the Bastrop County wildfires got a new home on “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”!
