A $276,000 FEMA grant will allow a fire department in Grant County, Washington, to purchase a water tender to be used to fight, among other things, wildfires (1); meanwhile, Burn Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) efforts are continuing near Reno, Nevada, in areas scorched by recent wildfires (2). Firefighters in New Mexico got some wildfire training over the weekend (3). Austin Community College's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is putting together a documentary on the heroism of people who battled the Labor Day wildfires in Central Texas (4); and the importance of heavy equipment operators in fighting wildfires in that state is examined by the next article (5). Firefighters in Atlantic County, New Jersey, conducted controlled burns on 20 acres (6); while firefighters in Delaware will set 24 acres ablaze in Cape Henlopen State Park today (7); and US Forest Service will be setting controlled burns on 150 acres in Craig County, Virginia, as well (8). After three suspicious fires in Okeechobee County this weekend, Florida Department of Agriculture Law Enforcement launched an investigation (9); and a 130-acre wildfire burning in southeast Volusia County has finally been contained (10). Canadair CL-415 aircraft grappled with forest fires near Genoa, Italy, that forced evacuation of some homes (11); but Israel's Finance and Interior ministers have been faulted over the response to the deadly wildfire in Carmel Forest by a report issued by the office of the State Comptroller (12). Fire officials in the African nation of Rwanda imposed burn restrictions on people living near Akagera National Park due to the bushfire danger (13). Wildfires have reduced thousands of acres in India's Rajiv Gandhi (Nagarahole) National Park to ashes (14); while blazes in the Western Ghats could cause a shortage of food for elephants, according to authorities (15). Bushfire smoke along the Thai-Myanmar border continues to worsen, causing respiratory problems and preventing flights (16). In the future, Victorians may be able to consult a high-tech Australian website which provides up-to-date information on bushfires (17); but nearly 700 New South Wales Education Department sites have been listed as being at risk from bushfires (18). A bushfire was reported near the Shire of Capel in Western Australia (19); while researchers at Edith Cowan University discuss the use of wi-fi technology in detecting bushfires in the next segment (20). As the Tasmania Fire Service continues to evaluate their Emergency Alert system, some in the government are calling for faster action (21); where farmers are adding up the damage done by bushfires outside of Hobart over the weekend (22); but the community of Karanja barely averted damage itself (23). And finally, Canadians from Slave Lake, Alberta, wanting to re-plant after a wildfire destroyed 40% of that town in 2011 have turned to a local gardening guru for advice!
