In Southern California, San Diego-based Utility Consumers Action Network is claiming that SDG&E wants to recoup $463 million in liability costs from ratepayers to cover wildfire losses in 2007 (1); even as Firehouse World Expo, which is taking place at San Diego Convention Center, is expecting to draw over 5,000 visitors (2). In South Carolina, where 3,000 wildfires annually cost $25 million to suppress, there is a debate in the state Senate over the Prescribed Fire Act (7); but several wildfires in central Florida have kept firefighters busy (8). The next article focuses on wildfire preparedness by the Corps of Cuban Forest Rangers in a country which typically sees 20,000 hectares burn per year (9); while citrus farmers in the African nation of Ghana tallied up their losses to bushfires annually in a country which typically sees $10 million in crop losses every year (10). Having experienced 100 wildfires since the first of the year, Southwest China's drought-stricken Yunnan Province is bracing for more (11); and in Australia, Victoria's Fire Services Commissioner reported that a bushfire safer place in the Macedon Ranges which cost $1.2 million to construct is now complete (12). The danger from a 30,000-hectare bushfire which has been threatening Northcliffe, Western Australia, for almost two weeks is finally diminishing (13); but even though a bushfire near the Shire of Dundas was officially extinguished on Saturday, FESA firefighters will continue to monitor the site for some time in case of a rekindle (14); and after spending six months in the hospital recovering from injuries suffered in a bushfire in Kimberly, an ultra-marathoner is finally going home (15). Tasmania's Climate Commission offered a grim forecast for industry in that state if measures are not taken to correct Global Warming (16). And finally, a lucky goose flew into electrical lines in California, sparking a wildfire, and lived to honk about it!
