In response to a broken link to an article from yesterday's edition, Wildfire NOTD subscriber Jon Keeley, a Research Ecologist at USGS Western Ecological Research Center, sent along a working link to the article on the Bel-Air fire fifty years ago (1); and although firefighter injuries nationwide fell to a two decade low, National Fire Protection Association reported that 71,875 injuries were suffered in the line of duty (2). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Tom Eversole, Executive Director of American Helicopter Services & Aerial Firefighting Association, sent along a press release about a request by USFS that aerial firefighting contractors be prepared to start fighting wildfires a bit earlier in 2012 (3); followed by a compendium of air-tanker information in the next article, including findings from the RAND Corporation on Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT) usage (4). The Kern River Valley Fire Safe Council will be discussing California's new wildfire fees at their next meeting on November 17th (5); while US Forest Service arson investigators have determined that a 1,500-acre wildfire which destroyed four homes in Trinity County in September was human-caused (6). Pursuant to the Lake Tahoe Basin Multi-jurisdictional Fuel Reduction Plan, US Forest Service lit a few controlled burns around the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe (7); and a funder-based partnership that would help with water supply and forest restoration in areas ravaged by wildfires was unveiled by Northern Arizona University (8). The Steiner Ranch Wildfire Planning Group, a coalition of organizations concerned about wildfires in that Texas community, will be conducting landscaping debris cleanup November 12th (9); but officials there are lamenting the theft of their rescue trailer, which proved useful during recent wildfires (10); while nearly $26 million in wildfire relief money has been handed out to 3,900 recipients across the state (11); where a legal firm has set up a website to help wildfire survivors seeking compensation for their losses (12); and they may get a lot of clients complaining about their tax bills on property that no longer exists (13). The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Forestry Bureau awarded $240,000 in grants to over 100 rural fire departments statewide to help with wildfire protection (14). Firefighters have declared full containment of wildfires burning in Missouri's Mark Twain National Forest (15); although hunters venturing into burn areas have been warned about falling timber (16). Researchers from the University of Cincinnati flew a Surveillance for Intelligent Emergency Response Robotic Aircraft (SIERRA) over a West Virginia controlled burn to test out their concept for mapping wildfires (17). Over 1,500 firefighters brought a wildfire burning in southwestern Tibet under control (18); while dozens of police and emergency officials will attend the Standing Council on Police and Emergency Management meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, on Friday to discuss, among other things, bushfires (19). As Neighborhood Safer Places are set up in Victoria, Australia, Macedon Ranges Shire officials said that theirs would not be ready until February (20); but the next article takes a closer look at the bushfire situation in Western Australia in light of a damning report on fire agency coordination issues in that state (21); even as a bushfire was reported outside of Wanneroo (22). And finally, an article about the sad passing of Hal Bruno, former head of the National Fallen Firefighter’s Foundation, reveals that he was a certified volunteer firefighter for over 60 years!
