A National Geographic reporter relates his experiences, including tagging along with a 20-person wildland firefighting crew in our first article today (1). Mountainous parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties are under Red Flag alerts through Sunday afternoon (2); even as CAL FIRE firefighters snuffed a wildfire that scorched between 10 and 15 acres in Southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (3). A camper whose unattended fire sparked New Mexico's 53,342-acre Last Chance Fire faces a $5,000 fine and the possibility of six months in jail (4); while Oklahoma's governor has lifted burn bans in 14 more counties as the wildfire danger continues to decline (5). A support group has been set up for high school students in Smithville, Texas, who lost everything in the wildfires (6); but donations continue to arrive at various Texas wildfire relief organizations, including a $60,000 donation from Target Corporation (7); and perfect strangers have donated entire motorhomes stocked with necessities for displaced families (8). Officials in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest estimate that they have saved millions by allowing the 24,200-acre Norton Point Fire to burn all summer (9); but the controversial Resident Watchmen Program in Cook County, Illinois, is examined by the next article (10). Although the 70-acre wildfire in Smyth County, Virginia, has been extinguished, fire officials fear that others could follow (11). A company in Pune, India, has unveiled a new cell phone SMS app that would allow passersby to alert fire officials to forest fires (12). Funds from Australia's Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund have allowed the residents of Nillumbik to convert St. Andrew's Hall into a cinema (13); while a former Department of Conservation and Land Management official warned that Western Australia is not well prepared for bushfires (14).
