WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 041411

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Chuck Bushey, President of the International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along an invitation to a webinar with US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Lab Research Ecologist Michael Ryan, who will be discussing the interrelationship between fire and environmental carbon on May 1st (1). Nearly 20 fire departments belonging to the Central Arizona Wildland Response Team are preparing for the fast-approaching wildfire season (2); while a 250-acre wildfire that briefly threatened dozens of homes outside of Silver City, New Mexico, has been contained (3). The Colorado State Forest Service director was thankful for precipitation which would help diminish wildfire activity in that state (4). A wildfire in Comanche County, Oklahoma, quickly spread to 400 acres yesterday (5); while hundreds of acres went up in smoke in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (6). The weather outlook promises more wildfires in Oklahoma (7); and the same in Texas (8). Thirteen wildfires raged across Texas yesterday, as the next item shows (9); where several wildfires converged south of Pecos (10); while a SEAT flying out of La Junta airport provided support to firefighters battling a massive blaze near Las Animas yesterday (11); but some bigger guns were brought in afterwards to bring the 14,000-acre wildfire to 90% containment (12); while logging equipment was blamed for an 800-acre wildfire that burned in Hardin County (13). Residents of communities in Garza County, Texas, supported firefighters with water and snacks while they battled nearby wildfires (14); and others provided relief to those who have suffered from the West Texas wildfires (15); while Texas RioGrande Legal Aid is providing free legal advice to homeowners in West Texas impacted by the wildfires (16); and farmers and ranchers will have access to hay through the Texas Department of Agriculture (17). A number of experts will come together on May 4th to discuss the mountain pine beetle epidemic at the Mountain Pine Beetle Forum in Helena, Montana (18); and firefighters in Arkansas are conducting controlled burns in a couple of national forests beginning today (19); but weather forecasts show high fire danger across Georgia, prompting some communities to stop issuing burn permits (20). The US will be sending two aircraft to assist the Mexican government in battling a 200,000-acre wildfire south of the border (21); and NASA provides a striking photograph of smoke plumes emanating from those blazes (22). The impact of bushfires on vegetation on the Caribbean island nation of Trinidad is examined in the next item (23); while seventeen wildfires were reportedly burning in Spain (24). Although Russia's efforts to provide satellite maps of forest fires is a good thing, a number of people argue that better coordination within the fire services would be more important in fighting future wildfires such as the ones which devastated that country last summer (25). China has its hands full with wildfires, as the next two articles show (26)(27). In Australia, the Mountain Cattlemen's Association applauded the Victorian government's decision to continue studying cattle grazing in Alpine National Park in an effort to reduce bushfires (28); while the community of Bendigo unveiled their Black Saturday bushfire memorial (29); but a farmer from Redesdale is up to his eyeballs in debt after bushfires damaged his plantation in 2009 (30). And finally, firefighters in Penn Township, Indiana, used to getting cats out of trees, had a slightly different encounter this time!
