WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 041211

Contrary to the wishes of nearby residents, Arizona's Coconino National Forest will not automatically ban campfires even after the ravages of last year's Schultz Fire (1). A wildfire that was contained Sunday outside of Las Animas, Colorado, brewed up due to high winds Monday night (2); the next article providing a civilian view of the impact the Crystal Fire had on homeowners in Larimer County (3). The sheriff of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, threatened to jail anyone defying the current burn ban after numerous wildfires in the area (4). A summary of wildfire activity across Texas is provided by the next item (5); where the Texas Forest Service is holding meetings to inform homeowners of measures they can take to protect their homes as that state has seen 650 wildfires scorch 916 mi.², destroying 200 homes in the process (6); severely burning a West Texas firefighter (7); sending up smoke plumes that could be seen by NASA satellites from space (8); one small wildfire becoming a large tire fire in Alton (9); fire crews employing heavy construction equipment to help bring the blaze under control (10); while help poured in from 33 states (11); and Texas Forest Service set up a regional office in Midland to help coordinate efforts against the massive wildfires burning across West Texas (12); cutting power to McDonald Observatory outside of Fort Davis (13); prompting the governor to tour areas ravaged by the blazes (14); while firefighters in Angelina County kept a close eye on one blaze in their neck of the woods (15); and a 50,000-acre wildfire in Garza county is finally out (16). The snow is barely gone, but Minnesota Interagency Fire Center in Grand Rapids is reminding homeowners of the fire danger from debris burns (17); and officials from Florida Division of Emergency Management announced that this is Wildfire Awareness Week, encouraging homeowners to be Firewise (18). Mexico's Environment Secretary appealed to his North American neighbors for help in battling a massive wildfire that has burned 185,000 acres in the state of Coahuila, where $8.7 million has been allocated for air tankers, including the 747 Supertanker (19). Thinning of vegetation in British Columbia is being performed ahead of the wildfire season (20); even as the British Columbia Forestry Service was called in to help battle a wildfire outside of Kelowna (21). Wildfires continued to crop up in Spain and Portugal (22); while an environmental health researcher at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup, Western Australia, weighs in on the importance of controlled burns to reduce the respiratory impact of bushfires (23). And finally, a cautionary tale from the Colorado Professional Fire Fighters Foundation, which discovered that funds intended to help two injured firefighters were being siphoned off by scam artists!
