Our first article today profiles the head of US Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Research Station in Albany, California (1); while US Forest Service is moving ahead with plans to conduct controlled burns in South Lake Tahoe, California (2). The Bureau of Land Management will be clearing vegetation in south-central Arizona to reduce the wildfire danger (3); and New Mexico's Gila National Forest announced a series of controlled burns this week (4). Fearing damage to emerging plants and erosion of the soil, officials in Idaho have banned motorized vehicles in areas scorched by wildfires (5). With nearly a dozen counties already under a burn ban, fire agencies across Oklahoma are bracing for bad wildfire conditions today (6); and a wildfire was reported near Lake Diversion, Texas, yesterday (7). Some important safety tips in disposing of ashes are provided in the next article by North Carolina Division of Forest Resources (8). U.S. Forest Service conducted controlled burns on 3000 acres in Florida's Apalachicola National Forest yesterday (9); and some more were conducted in Seminole State Forest in Orange County (10). Ontario, Canada, is committing $6.2 million to outfit a high-tech training center for that province's fleet of nine CL-415 firefighting aircraft (11). Residents of Landsdale, Western Australia, have been told that the bushfire threat is reduced in their area (12); but as cyclone Bianca bears down on that state, fire agencies are expecting high winds coupled with bushfires (13). A bushfire has been reported by Country Fire Service in South Australia's Barossa Valley (14). And finally, Wildfire NOTD subscriber Colin Stewart of Thermo Gel in Australia sent along an interesting tidbit about how the Aussies are going high-tech with their fire surveillance!
