WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 012611

As Oklahoma suffers through one of the driest winters on record, the wildfire danger is correspondingly high (1); while South Dakota's Black Hills National Forest Supervisor weighs in on a brief history of pine mountain beetle infestations in his neck of the woods (2). TangentLink sent along a reminder about their upcoming Aerial Firefighting Conference & Exhibition taking place in Washington DC in late March (3); and a compromise agreement between Madison County and the Georgia Forestry Commission will allow wildland firefighting trucks to remain available at all times (4). A burn ban will stay in effect in Jacksonville, Florida (5); even as fire officials in Alchua County came up with several methods to help battle wildfires while they hunt for an arsonist (6). The Boston Globe weighs in on the value of biomass conversion in reducing forest fires (7); but the 53,000-member Air Line Pilots Association has asked for federal help in providing laser-free zones in major metropolitan areas, something which could also be of importance to night-flying heli-tanker pilots (8). Despite the crash of a Conair air-tanker, British Columbia, Canada, reported fewer aircraft-caused deaths in 2010 (9); while West Kelowna has a series of controlled burns on the docket (10). The Dominican Republic will be conducting a 10-day seminar on forest firefighting in that Caribbean island nation (11). A fast-moving bushfire has been reported outside of Wanneroo, north of Perth, Western Australia (12); and several areas in South Australia are being put on high bushfire alert for the next 24 hours by Country Fire Service (13). And finally, UAVs have been used to track wildfires for some time, but one which crashed near Fort Huachuca, Arizona, actually caused one!
