WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 011311

An Op-Ed piece takes a look at local political efforts to preserve wilderness areas in and around Southern California's Angeles National Forest (1); while the President of Carson Helicopters responded to the National Transportation Safety Board's report on the crash of one of their helicopters in Northern California (2). A small wildfire which occurred near the Fourmile Canyon Fire burn area outside of Boulder, Colorado, was quickly doused by firefighters (3); but the benefits of using biomass boilers to help convert 2,000,000 acres of beetle-killed trees into energy for that state was touted by the US Secretary of Agriculture (4). Residents of Bryan and Chatham counties in Georgia have been advised that a wildfire is burning at Fort Stewart (5); while a wildfire was reported Wednesday night in St. Johns County, Florida (6); and a wildfire warning has been issued for Lee County as well (7). Heavy snowfall in Canada has encouraged Alberta Sustainable Resource Development that the wildfire season for 2011 will be diminished compared to 2010 (8); but a massive wildfire in 2007 is leading to economic woes for a timber company in the Hhohho region of Swaziland, Africa (9). An Op-Ed piece by a professor at University of New South Wales School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems argues that now is the time for Australia to harness the power of satellites in tracking natural disasters, such as bushfires, from space (10).
