Although recent rains have dampened drought conditions in Southern California, Orange County fire officials caution that dead fuels will not be effected as much (1); and a teenager accused of setting wildfires will be tried as an adult in San Bernardino County court (2). A Northern California resident is in court, accused of sparking a 1,000 acre wildfire last year (3); but a new study from Oregon State University disputes previous studies in regards to how much carbon dioxide was actually released by wildfires in the Cascades (4); while an Oregon city councilor sounds off about his objection to a forest management plan in Ashland (5). Prescott National Forest is holding a job fair to recruit seasonal firefighters in Arizona, something which will no doubt be well attended in these tough economic times (6). A former Montana fire official will be assuming a new position with the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada (7); but Durango, Colorado, city officials reigned in the Bureau of Land Management after finding out that the BLM's plan for thinning vegetation around the town involved heavy equipment (8). Chris Mehl of Montana-based Headwaters Economics sent along an article highlighting a new state law that compels counties to identify wildfire risk areas with an eye towards curtailing real estate development there (9); even as fire agencies in that state are concerned about the lack of snowfall and its implications for the coming fire season (10). Debris burning near South Dakota's Mount Rushmore is covered by the next article (11). Still coping with a long drought despite recent rains, South Carolina residents are being advised about proper fire precautions (12). A small wildfire in Pomona Park, Florida, kept firefighters busy yesterday (13); even as firefighters in Volusia County lit controlled burns to reduce fuel levels (14). An article from South Africa examines the influence of wildfire smoke on regeneration of burn area vegetation, as revealed in a new study published in the Journal of Natural Products (15). Researchers are meeting at the annual Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society conference in Canberra to discuss, among other things, the effect Global Warming may be having on bushfire severity (16); and a meteorologist projects the future of wildfire prediction modeling in the following article (17). Next up is the story of one community's efforts to create a Black Saturday memorial as the first anniversary approaches (18). Property values in Victoria's Dandenong Ranges appear to be dropping in response to the bushfire threat (19); while many residents of Gippsland who were burned out in the Black Saturday bushfires are reluctant to return (20). Dozens of firefighters brought a bushfire in a South Australia conservation park under control (21); while Western Australians are gathering much-needed supplies for residents of Toodyay impacted by recent bushfires, as told by the next two items (22)(23). And finally, it's a tale of two dogs: a puppy that was rescued from a deep hole in Gorman by LA County Fire personnel was much friendlier than an adult dog who bit an LA City firefighter last week during a rescue operation!
