WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 070109

A wildfire in northern San Diego County, California, was quickly dealt with by CAL FIRE yesterday; while a new fire station may be funded in a mountainous California community by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money. A summary of wildfires burning in and around Kern County, California, is provided by the next article; a resident of Scotts Valley who had conducted an authorized agriculture burn nearly lost his home in the resulting wildfire; and a wildfire in Central California scorched over 600 acres yesterday. A pair of wildfires was attended by firefighters in Eastern Washington state yesterday. In a tale of two communities, a federal grant was awarded to one Colorado community that completed a wildfire plan, but denied to another that hadn't gotten around to it yet; while a small wildfire was reported in Grand Junction. A wildfire briefly threatened homes as it raced through Eastern Oklahoma County yesterday; and East Texas is getting some help from Louisiana firefighters. Fire officials in Alabama are investigating a trio of wildfires that erupted in a suspicious manner; but the value of Firewise Communities in Florida is explored in the next article. Another article about the effects of climate change on the western US is provided by Science Daily. Seeing a potential labor pool amongst the growing number of unemployed people in British Columbia, fire authorities are offering them $15 an hour to fight wildfires. Alberta, Canada's, largest wildfire in a decade is finally just about out. A Turkish article discusses an Indonesian bushfire fact-finding mission to Australia (how's that for cosmopolitan?) In the aftermath of the Black Saturday bushfires, lawyers for the Royal Bushfire Commission meeting in Melbourne, Australia, recommend discarding the 'stay or go' policy that authorities feel led to so many deaths; to be replaced with a new policy, as our last wildfire article today shows.
