WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 063009

Our first wildfire story deals with a small wildfire that was spotted in the northern part of Los Angeles yesterday; followed by two stories that detail a number of wildfires in California that kept local fire crews and CAL FIRE busy yesterday. A forest fire sprouted up outside of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Monday; followed by a fascinating look at the world of private wildfire-fighting companies in the western US, provided by an article from, of all places, Boston, Massachusetts! A pair of teenagers has been apprehended in regards to a score of wildfires set in upstate New York over the spring. Honoring their mutual aid agreement, Nova Scotia is sending firefighters to help provincial neighbor Quebec fight wildfires. New Zealand's Red Cross has tallied $3 million in donations to help Australia with bushfire relief. Disaster piled on top of disaster on Black Saturday as overloaded phone lines and faulty software upgrades hobbled emergency response to frantic callers, the Royal Bushfire Commission heard in Melbourne, Australia. Ash from the Black Saturday bushfires doesn't appear to be affecting Victoria's water supply too badly as of yet. Over $26 million will be spent to do a statewide upgrade on Victoria's fire stations; but Firewatch Australia, a firm that provides bushfire detection systems, has complained that fire agencies are more interested in buying appliances (that's apparatus in US lingo) than advanced technology that could save lives and property. And finally, a very old bear celebrated his 65th birthday!
