WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 010709
First up in wildfire news today, a press release about a meeting in Irvine next week to discuss public policy issues raised by wildfires, attended by Orange County Fire Authority's Chip Prather. Some controlled burns will get underway in Riverside County soon, administered by Riverside County/CAL FIRE, and firefighters have scored half-a-million from FEMA to do much the same thing in Nevada County, California. An Op-Ed piece from Redding decries the EPA's practice of enforcing air pollution standards while turning a blind eye to smoke from wildfires. An article from MSNBC underscores the danger to pines in Washington state from a six-legged menace, while one from Arizona discusses the changing landscape in forested regions of that state. Firefighters in Daytona Beach, Florida, are nervously watching the drought index (and fire danger) increase despite much-needed rain. In drought-stricken Uruguay, South America, a massive forest fire forced the evacuation of 2,000 tourists and threatens 500,000 homes, forcing their Air Force to employ its assets to help fight it. In New South Wales, Australia, firefighters are struggling to bring two bushfires north and south of Sydney under control, while awaiting an incoming front that could bring helpful rain along with harmful winds. A railroad company in that state is working to clear vegetation and debris away from railroad tracks to reduce bushfire danger. Yesterday it was snakes in Nepal, today it's cats in India, as forest rangers have to corner a leopard who had left its habitat (mostly due to fires and construction destroying that habitat) and headed into the city.
