WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 102308

San Diego's Proposition A is in the news again, this time with a negative editorial from Fallbrook, followed by an article that might be of interest to the San Diego Regional Fire Safety Forum after a discussion at today's meeting about hiring an independent wildfire consultant to make recommendations to the county/city administrators. As firefighters mop up the Fontana brushfire, a new one broke out near Mt. Baldy in the Inland Empire, and another raced through vegetation in west LA. San Diegans and their insurance are in the news again today, this time in an LA Times article about how people feel they were ripped off by insurance companies. Central California also had its share of wildfires large and small today, and residents of Tahoe City were smoked out by a prescribed burn. Kentucky has nearly a dozen forest fires scattered around the state, while Prescott, AZ, authorities were chagrined that high school kids had left bonfires unattended during homecoming parties. In New Mexico, a debate is raging over how best to handle wildfires there, and firefighters in New Jersey are finally getting control of a woodland blaze. Fire authorities in Utah have made some progress on investigation of a forest fire there as well. Echoing California's use of the National Guard for firefighting, Australians may be calling up their army troops to help in the case of extreme bushfires, as happened in 2003. Also in the line of fire, South Africa is preparing for what is expected to be a busy season in their region.
