WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 101708
There were fewer fire stories in the news today with the quelling of the Southern California wildfires. Leading off in San Diego, the North County Times appeals to the governor to allow more aircraft to fly at night, while an article from Chicago illustrates the reason caution must be used in night operations. The San Diego Business Journal ran a story decrying the slow rate of rebuilding after the 2007 wildfires, and Santa Clara County is taking a leaf from San Diego's playbook by installing their own reverse-911 calling system. The cause of LA's Marek Fire has been determined to be linked to a vehicle, but no further details have been provided as of yet. In the Sequoias, a new fire has apparently begun, and, lost in the frenzy of stories about the Southern California wildfires, the Chalk Fire continues to grow slowly in the Los Padres National Forest. Residents of Big Bear are replanting areas ravaged by fires, and a small wildfire has been spotted in the Catalina Mountains outside of Tucson, AZ, a location that has hosted some large fires in years past. A study from Northwestern Arizona University discusses findings on carbon emissions from forests (5% of the total US CO2 output comes from fires, equal to 1/3 of the emissions from vehicles), and a company shows how fiber-cement siding can help homes weather wildfires. The severe drought that has been afflicting the southern US is heading north, something that has been reflected by dispatches from Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia lately, and North Carolina is also reporting changes in their climate that affect the wildfire situation in that state as the next article shows. Overseas, Lebanon has been successful in raising substantial funds to help improve their ability to fight fires there. Finally, a story that adds new meaning to 'Stay and Defend', since this resident lives in a bunker!
