Scientists at NOAA have done some groundbreaking work on perfecting airdrops that will no doubt be of interest to air-tanker crews, but even more so to the folks developing PCADS for aerial delivery, as the next article shows. Environmentalists are concerned that they may lose the ability to block forest policy decisions nationwide if the Supreme Court rules against them, while the governor has unveiled a privately-financed project in the Sierras that could help mitigate wildfire danger there. Tennessee is trying to rein in accidental wildfires via burning permit enforcement, and Texas is going one step further by educating the public on both wildfire and home fire prevention. In a tale of two controlled burns, South Dakota firefighters are conducting some to augment their own fire prevention policies, but a plantation owner in North Carolina may be liable for one he ignited on his property that got out of control. Four small wildfires were quickly controlled in San Luis Obispo County, but officials in the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest in Wisconsin are still trying to figure out who is setting tires on fire there. In a scenario similar to the one being played out in San Diego County, officials in Summit County, Colorado, have placed a measure on the ballot that would apply a property tax increase to homeowners to provide funds for wildfire protection, among other things. Overseas, a minor is being charged with starting a bushfire in an Australian national park, and the Indians are using satellite technology to cut response time to wildfires from 12 hours to 2 hours.
