The Los Angeles Times ran an article about a new drone the LA County Sheriffs Department is testing (Sheriff to test drone for crimefighting). I contacted a friend who is in charge of the Sheriffs R&D group, Commander Sid Heal, asking him about applications with the US Forest Service. He replied that the Forest Service is already experimenting with these. This could really help crews building control lines to keep an eye on the fire without having to send someone "over the hill" to keep an eye on the fire so the crew doesn't get caught in a burnover. Of course, the question of whether the USFS will use these boils down to a question of money, as always. What are your thoughts on this issue? Let me know at marcher47@firebomberpublications.com.
