WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 021214

United States

(1) Wildfire NOTD subscriber Bruce Courtright, Chairman of the National Institute for the Elimination of Catastrophic Wildfire, sent along a clarification about an article he submitted yesterday (the article has been included for reference): "Our views are that in a time of climate change and severe drought in the West, coupled with unprecedented overstocking of timber in our National forests we need to take aggressive action on all wildfires. The damage to our fragile ecosystems from catastrophic fires can last hundreds of years and result in major loss of our Nation's Forest heritage. We are working hard to facilitate Quality Legislation that will allow the recovery of our National forests and provide security from Catastrophic Wildfires and grow jobs for Rural Communities. We need to communicate to the Nation's people that well planned and managed control burns can be a valuable tool, but not managing our Forests will result in dire consequences for our Nation."
