WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 110113

Wildfire NOTD subscriber Tony Morris, Communications Director at Wildfire Research Network, interviews Lockheed's Richard Briggs about the proposed C-130XJ air-tanker in our first article today (1). A Stanislaus National Forest Protection Officer provided his view of the damage done by the Rim Fire in California's Sierra Nevadas (2); but although some snow has fallen in Summit County, Colorado, residents were cautioned by the High Country Conservation Center that the wildfire danger still persists (3). A 10-acre wildfire outside of Groton, Massachusetts, is now under control (4); and fire crews in Horry County, South Carolina, snuffed two small wildfires yesterday afternoon (5). An article from British Columbia, Canada, discusses how forest firms that can clear timber to prevent wildfires may benefit from a bill under consideration by the Provincial government (6); while an air-tanker pilot who died fighting bushfires in New South Wales, Australia, was honored with a posthumous commendation (7). And finally, firefighters in Yakima, Washington, were able to save the life of a dog with a pet oxygen mask, proving once again that firefighters are a dog's best friend!
