Wildfire NOTD subscriber Bettina Boxall, a Pulitzer Prize-winning Reporter for the
Los Angeles Times, reported on a new study published in the journal
Science in which seven scientists, including Wildfire NOTD subscriber Scott Stephens, a Fire Researcher at
UC Berkeley, advocated for more controlled burns in forests in the West (1); while much of Southern California is under Red Flag warnings brought on by Santa Ana winds (2); prompting US Forest Service to close the roads into Angeles National Forest (3); insurance companies reminding homeowners to have their policies up-to-date just in case (4); a one-acre wildfire quickly being dealt with in Walnut (5); Wildfire NOTD subscriber Sarah Burge, a Reporter for the
Riverside Press-Enterprise, telling about a 10-acre wildfire that broke out near the community of Perris (6); but firefighters will have to manage with one less air-tanker after the crash landing of a CAL FIRE S-2T at Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base (7); this as a 5 to 7-acre wildfire was reported at Camp Pendleton (8); and power was being cut off in San Diego's backcountry to reduce the wildfire danger (9); SD County Supervisors voicing their support for efforts to transfer seven C-27 Spartan aircraft to the US Forest Service for use as air-tankers (10); in the meantime, a four-acre wildfire broke out in San Luis Obispo County (11); and Red Flags were hoisted in the San Francisco Bay Area due to gusty winds (12); containment on the 257,135-acre Rim Fire being brought to 95% (13); but a 1,000-acre wildfire forced evacuation of an apartment complex in Solano County (14); a 159-acre wind-driven wildfire blazing through Sonoma County's Crane Creek Regional Park (15); while Del Norte County supervisors expressed frustration over the way U.S. Forest Service manages wildfires on federal land (16). In Arizona, the Prescott Fire Department Chief who oversaw the ill-fated Granite Mountain HotShots is being forced out by city officials (17); a smokejumper who died during training being remembered in a memorial service at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho (18). And finally, the New Hampshire Federation of Forest Fire Warden Associations honored four generations of a family that has been fighting wildfires for a very long time!
