The National Fire Protection Association released its latest statistics on firefighter fatalities, marking a downtrend in deaths that included at least two wildland firefighters and two inmate firefighters (1); this at a time when a US Senate bill cosponsored by Sen. Mark Udall would allow federal seasonal firefighters to compete for career jobs that open up at land management agencies (2). A 2 mi.² wildfire burning on Southern California's Morongo Indian Reservation is now 30% contained (3); but a smokejumper was killed by a falling tree while battling a lightning-sparked wildfire in Northern California's Modoc National Forest (4); Mendocino National Forest officials reporting that 14 lightning-sparked wildfires resulted from 8,000 lightning strikes across the region (5). Fire crews continued to grapple with a 9 mi.² wildfire south of Kennewick, Washington, that briefly forced highway closures (6). A wind-driven 7,000-acre wildfire continued its march towards Kingston, New Mexico, which has been evacuated (7); while an Incident Commander reflects on the skills necessary to conduct wildfire fighting safely in the next article (8). Evacuations of approximately 7,000 Colorado Springs residents were forced by a wind-driven wildfire which has burned between 7,500 and 8,000 acres (9); where the latest estimates are that at least 80 homes have burned (10); even as federal firefighters are taking over command of the battle (11); and air-tankers were arriving from across the country (12); including MAFFS-equipped military C-130's (13); and the 21st Space Wing lent a hand as well (14); but multiple fires in the state were stretching air resources thin (15); one family chronicling their narrow escape in the next article (16); the one which follows giving an overview of wildfire activity across the state (17); where the Red Cross did their best to provide shelter for evacuees (18); but a two-acre wildfire in the Pike National Forest has been fully contained (19). Having already fought over two dozen wildfires in Idaho this year, the Bureau of Land Management remarked on the fact that fire season arrived upwards of six weeks early this year (20). In Canada, Manitoba Conservation reported a dozen new wildfires as evacuees arrived in Brandon (21); while a pair of wildfires was apparently sparked by an intoxicated man near Happy Valley/Goose Bay, Newfoundland (22). Heading to Europe, wildfires were reported outside of Estepona, Spain, Alanno, Italy, and Toroni, Chalkidiki, Greece (23). And finally, firefighters battling Colorado's Black Forest Fire were able to save one individual from the flames: a baby deer!
