WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 011013

Malheur County, Oregon, is beginning the slow recovery from wildfires that devastated 556,000 acres last summer (1); while NOAA identified wildfires in Colorado and the West as one of the most important weather events of 2012 (2). Google will donate water tanks estimated to be worth $1.6 million to various organizations in Oklahoma, some of which could be used for rural firefighters during wildfires (3); and Verisk Insurance Solutions has made a new application called FireLine, which will help with wildfire risk management estimates, available in Texas (4). A volunteer firefighter from Pennsylvania admitted to setting several arson wildfires "because he likes to fight them" (5). The International Association of Wildland Fire sent along an item on special hotel rates at their upcoming 4th Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, to be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, next month (6); even as Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune began an 8-month-long program of controlled burns on the base (7). Tangent Link sent along a reminder to sponsors and exhibitors about their upcoming aerial firefighting conference in Aix-en-Provence, France, this coming April (8). A photo spread shows some of Australia's worst bushfires since the turn of the millennium (9); while a lecturer from the University of Tasmania counsels adapting to life on a bushfire-prone continent (10); the following article discussing how better to deal with bushfire arsonists, a problem which costs Australia over $1 billion a year (11). A pair of bushfires in Victoria are worrisome to fire officials (12); the situation not helped by bushfire arsonists, who are wreaking havoc around Melbourne (13); current conditions prompting a total burn ban for the entire state (14); the situation not helped by government warnings that bushfire alerts through SMS may not be reliable (15). Following the destruction of 2 million ha of pastureland by bushfires in Queensland, Bendigo Bank has set up the Far North Queensland Bushfire Appeal with an initial donation of $100,000 (16). Firefighters in New South Wales continued to battle 126 bushfires (17); where firefighters are racing to stop one fire heading for the Tianjara plateau, where unexploded military ordinance is located (18); and although Rural Fire Service has been gaining ground on bushfires throughout the state, a warm-up over the weekend could put all that effort to naught (19); this at a time when the state government's firefighter funding cuts are hampering their ability to respond to bushfires (20). Fire crews from New Zealand have arrived to help Tasmania battle bushfires (21); while the impact controlled burns had on reducing the severity of one bushfire is examined by the next article (22); Prince Charles and his wife donating to a bushfire relief fund (23); as are sports teams (24); but thieves made off with some donated goods at a bushfire shelter in Nubeena (25). And finally, firefighters in Virginia Beach, Virginia, had a unique call: putting out a fire caused by the homeowner's dog turning on the stove!
