Firefighters reached 15% containment on the 3,600-acre wildfire burning in Southern California's Angeles National Forest (1); with a little help from the DC-10 and air-tankers from the San Bernardino Air Attack Base (2); but not without some firefighter mishaps (3); some residents refusing to evacuate (4); South Coast Air Quality Management District assuring residents of areas below the fire that the air quality is not being impacted by smoke from the blaze (5); an audio segment from KPCC discussing the arrival of two CL-415 Super Scoopers at Van Nuys airport (6); while a two-acre wildfire was quickly snuffed by firefighters in San Bernardino County's Holcomb Valley (7); and a car fire in San Diego County sparked a wildfire which burned between 5 and 7 acres in the Cleveland National Forest (8); but quick work by firefighters in the Los Padres National Forest held a wildfire to 30 acres in size (9); while the 42,144-acre wildfire burning in the Mendocino National Forest is now 60% contained (10). Although the 36 mi.² wildfire near Cle Elum, Washington, is contained, the Department of Natural Resources reminded residents that the fire danger continues across much of the state (11). The next article provides a summary of wildfire activity in Idaho (12); while a trio of wildfires continue to burn in Nebraska and South Dakota (13). Kansas Forest Service indicated that 41,000 acres have burned so far this year, making it one of the worst on record (14); and a video segment provides an update on the 30-acre wildfire burning in Minnesota's Boundary Water Canoe Area (15); while firefighters in Vermont were grappling with a wildfire on Mount Mansfield (16). Heading to Canada, after 1,300 wildfires have burned 52,259 acres so far this year, British Columbia's Coastal Fire Centre said that the wildfire danger will remain high this month (17); and as the wildfire season comes to an end in the Yukon, the next article summarizes a year in which 125 wildfires burned substantially less acreage than usual (18). A photo montage shows wildfires burning in Brazil, which is experiencing a drought at the moment (19). In Southern Europe, wildfires continue to burn in Portugal, Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania, Turkey, and the North African nation of Morocco (20); firefighting aircraft from Spain and France joining 8,000 firefighters battling 280 blazes across Portugal (21). Mozambique's First Lady spoke out against uncontrolled bushfires in that African nation (22). The United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction commended Canberra, Australia, for its disaster preparedness (23); but Victoria's Bushfire Response Minister indicated that $66 million will be cut from the state's firefighting budget (24); and firefighters from several rural brigades battled a bushfire outside of Torbanlea, Queensland (25). Country Fire Service firefighters battled a 10-hectare bushfire in South Australia's Adelaide Hills (26); but FESA's Country Operations Assistant Chief said that Western Australia faced an above-average bushfire season (27).
