A video segment takes a look at wildfires burning across the Western US and Hawaii (1); smoke from wildfires in the West being reported as far away as the Eastern Seaboard (2). In Southern California, Wildfire NOTD subscriber Rick Hatton, CEO of 10 Tanker LLC, sent along a link with information on how people can help to keep the DC-10s flying (3); while firefighters brought containment of a 156-acre wildfire near Gorman to 90% yesterday afternoon (4); and Los Angeles Fire Department snuffed a series of small fires along the 101 freeway near Tarzana (5); but officials are investigating the death of an inmate firefighter who was battling Riverside County's 2,700-acre Buck Fire (6); Wildfire NOTD subscriber Jeff Bowman, former Fire Chief for San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and Brian Fennessy, Assistant Chief of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, discussing the dangers of night flying in the wake of US Forest Service's agreement to allow night ops over the Angeles National Forest for the first time in years (7); and an 1,137-acre wildfire in Stanislaus National Forest is now 95% contained (8); but a 5,130-acre wildfire burning in Mendocino County is only 10% contained (9); and a 23 mi.² blaze in Shasta County is just 5% contained (10); while an Op-Ed piece from Redding argues for more tree cutting to help reduce wildfires in Northern California (11); and despite the fact that 27,849 acres have been scorched in Lassen Volcanic National Park, visitors are still being allowed into the park (12). A summary of wildfire activity across Oregon is provided by the next article (13). Florida-based GelTech Solutions reported a successful operation controlling a timber fire in Washington state's Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest with their FireIce gel deployed from SEATs (14); followed by a pair of Op-Ed pieces from the Seattle Times which discuss the probable ascendancy of mega-fires unless federal rules change (15); and how wildfire arsonists should be held more accountable for their actions (16). A total of 14 active wildfires covering 700,000 acres are burning in Nevada (17); one of which burned 90 acres north of Sparks (18); while a firefighter who suffered burns in a Nevada wildfire has been released from the hospital (19). Firefighters closed in on complete containment of three wildfires in Arizona's Tonto National Forest over the weekend (20). Police in Colorado Springs arrested four people suspected of metal thievery from homes destroyed by the Waldo Canyon Fire (21); while lightning sparked a number of new wildfires in that state over the weekend (22). Firefighters continued to battle an 89,859-acre wildfire burning in Idaho's Salmon-Challis National Forest (23); frantically lighting backfires to slow the approach of the massive wildfire to the town of Featherville (24); the following article providing a behind-the-scenes look at the efforts of Air Attack Supervisors to coordinate air-tanker strikes (25); an editorial encouraging readers to be mindful of the wildfire danger in that state (26). Crews in Utah whittled the number of wildfires down to just two (27); while a Montana Public Service Coordinator draws a comparison between the emissions put out by industrial sources versus the CO2 attributed to wildfire smoke in that state in the next article (28). There was trouble in paradise, as a 2,000-acre wildfire blazed across Hawaii's garden isle of Kauai (29); and lightning strikes have sparked nearly 5 dozen wildfires in British Columbia, Canada (30). In Europe, wildfires were reported in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Albania, Macedonia, and Syria, as well as the North African nation of Algeria (31); where Spain has racked up the worst year for wildfires ever recorded, with 140,000 hectares burned to date (32); Italy's Civil Protection and Fire Fighting Division of Forest Rangers revealing that forest fire activity in that country had increased by 79% this year (33); officials evacuating campers from three campgrounds in Tuscany (34); while firefighters on the Greek island of Chios battled a 7,000-hectare wildfire which has forced the evacuation of nine villages and towns (35); a summary of wildfire activity in Russian Siberia being provided by the next item (36); but a 15-acre wildfire was apparently started by negligent shepherds in the former Soviet republic of Georgia (37). A summary of wildfire activity in the Asian nation of Thailand is up next (38). In Australia, Rural Fire Service firefighters battled about 20 bushfires a day along New South Wales' North Coast over the weekend (39); while one of Queensland's 259 controlled burns (planned to reduce the bushfire danger in that state this year) got out of control in the foothills of Mitchelton (40); but although firefighters will be marching on Queensland's Parliament today, enough will still be on the fire lines to deal with bushfires (41). And finally, a pair of S-2 air-tankers which had been battling Canadian wildfires since 1978 made their farewell flight over British Columbia!
