We lead off today with an article I wrote for Rotorcraft Pro Magazine about Night Vision Goggles (NVG) in use by Southern California fire departments that fight wildfires after dark (skip to Page 18 for the article) (1); followed by a story from Arizona, where the governor will address the issue of an active wildfire season at a press conference in Phoenix today (2). A 300-acre wildfire which stemmed from an agricultural burn that got out of control was reported in Routt County, Colorado (3); and Texans are being reminded to be prepared for blazes of the future as part of Wildfire Awareness Week in that state (4). A 500-acre wildfire burning in Pennsylvania's French Creek State Park is now 95% contained (5); while a wildfire blazed across 175 acres, destroying four condominiums in Sevier County, Tennessee (6). NBC News provides a video exposé on the early start to the wildfire season on the East Coast of the US (7). A trio of wildfires that scorched 50 acres in Webster County, West Virginia, has been contained (8); but Virginia Department of Forestry reported that five large wildfires are burning across the state, two of which closed Interstate 64 in Rockbridge and Alleghany counties (9). A major wildfire on New York's Long Island prompted the governor to declare a state of emergency for Suffolk County (10); where one firefighter was badly injured battling the blaze (11); but firefighters are finally packing up after extinguishing that 1,124-acre fire (12). Wildfire activity in New Jersey continues unabated, despite cooler, more humid conditions (13); and firefighters with the State Forest Fire Service are bracing for a bad season ahead (14). Taking note of wildfire activity in their next-door neighbor New Jersey, the Delaware Forest Service is warning residents of the current wildfire danger in their area (15). North Carolina Forest Service was asking residents to put off outdoor burning after a wildfire was extinguished in Gaston County yesterday (16); and windy conditions across Central Georgia prompted the National Weather Service to issue Red Flag warnings for the area (17). Wildfires continue to pop up as Florida suffers through its fifth driest first quarter on record (18); where a 25,000-acre wildfire which burned portions of Osceola National Forest is expected to scorch another 10,000 acres before firefighters contain it (19). An arson-sparked wildfire in the vicinity of Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada, that burned nearly 11 acres was finally extinguished yesterday afternoon (20); but as part of their ongoing efforts to reduce wildfires in Britain's Swinley Forest, Bracknell Forest Council will shut a portion of Foresters Way in order to conduct thinning operations (21). Noting that thousands of acres burn each year in the Himalayan nation of Bhutan, new rules about open fires have been put in place (22); and citing two major bushfires sparked by power poles, firefighters in Western Australia are concerned about maintenance on powerlines (23). And finally, firefighters from Beaufort, South Carolina, used to getting calls for cats caught in trees, had a bit more unusual emergency call this time!
