Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich urged speedier action by the US Forest Service in addressing issues raised after Southern California's 2009 Station Fire (1); while firefighters battled a 35-acre wildfire in the Inland Empire late Sunday (2); the next article taking a look at wildfires burning in Kern County (3); even as CAL FIRE requested that the Air National Guard activate one of the MAFFS-equipped C-130s based in Port Hueneme to help with wildfires in the interior (4). Next up we have a letter from the mayor of Santa Barbara, California, asking for help from federal officials in restoring the Santa Maria Federal Air Tanker Base to full-time status (5); and an update on wildfires sparked by lightning near San Luis Obispo over the weekend (6); followed by an article on wildfires in Central California (7); while additional lightning strikes lit up the Sierra Nevada mountain range as well (8); sparking three wildfires in the Plumas National Forest (9). Cooler weather is helping retard the growth of the 6,200-acre wildfire burning on Mount Hood, Oregon (10). A 4,250-acre wildfire burning in southern Washington state is 30% contained (11); where firefighters contained a five-acre wildfire burning near Wandermere (12); and continued to battle a forest fire in the Olympic National Forest (13). A wildfire that burned over 100 acres in Douglas County, Nevada, this weekend is now 75% contained (14). Lightning sparked an 80-acre wildfire in Indian Gulch, Idaho, on Sunday (15); and several lightning-sparked wildfires which are burning in the St. Joe River watershed have closed trails and roads in the area (16). With National Weather Service forecasting higher winds this week, firefighters in Oklahoma are bracing for more wildfires (17). The Texas Forest Service provides an update on wildfires in that state in the next item (18); while US Congressman Michael McCaul, who chairs the Department of Homeland Security Subcommittee, said that he's going to look into the slow response by federally contracted air-tankers like the DC-10, with a focus towards awarding an exclusive-use contract to 10 Tanker LLC (19); damage done by wildfires in that state having cost insurance companies an estimated $100 million, adding to the woes of an industry already hard hit by natural disaster claims (20); and residents who lost homes aren't doing too well either (21); even as railroads are being affected by the Texas wildfires, as a press release from Union Pacific shows (22); but despite the destruction done by wildfires in Bastrop County, students there are returning to school today (23); followed by an article that takes a look at the School of Information's wildfire salvage operations in that county (24); and although a National Weather Service forecast of increasing humidity and decreasing temperatures could be helpful to firefighters in Texas; (25) there are concerns that the current drought could last well into next year (26). Firefighters feel that burnout operations on a 6,000-acre wildfire burning in Ravalli County, Montana, were successful (27); but three wildfires burning in the Flathead and Lewis and Clark National Forests may continue to expand (28). A wildfire burning in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area has grown to 11,000 acres in size (29); while Michigan's Department of Natural Resources has dispatched firefighters and equipment to help with the Texas wildfires (30). An Ontario, Canada, man who left a fire on his property unattended will be fined $3,800 by the provincial government (31); and a video segment from Spain covers a 400 ha wildfire which burned in Andalucía on Sunday night (32). A study just released by researchers at the Australian National University shows that logging practices may have contributed to more dangerous bushfires in Victoria (33); where the state government is altering the power structure to give more power to the chief of police in a bushfire emergency (34); but without additional funding from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund, bushfire counselors may run out of money by the end of the year (35); and as the Moorabool Council has released Municipal Fire Management Plan and Township Protection Plans for public comment (36); the Yarra Ranges Council urged the state government to put power lines underground (37). A new study shows that 380,000 homes in New South Wales are at risk from bushfires (38). Firefighters from Queensland Fire and Rescue Service have their hands full with several bushfires, some of which may have been deliberately set (39); perhaps a foretaste of what is predicted for this coming bushfires season (40).
