Los Angeles County firefighters and fireships quickly doused a wildfire that was reported between Palmdale and Acton (1); while Orange County Fire Authority firefighters battled a wildfire burning in the South County community of Rancho Santa Margarita (2); a summary of Southern California wildfire activity up next (3). Scores of firefighters trained at Oregon's mid-Willamette Valley Fire School to prepare for that state's wildfire season (4); the following article providing some insight on what may be ahead for those firefighters (5). An overview of how wildfires across the southern US are stretching firefighters is provided by the next article (6). Having burned 537,220 acres and destroyed 32 homes, Arizona's Wallow Fire is now 70% contained (7); but a wildfire on the Mogollon Rim is only 10% contained after burning 1,955 acres (8); Arizona's approaching monsoon season further complicating wildfire forecasts (9). An update on wildfire activity in New Mexico is provided by the next article (10); where the high fire danger has forced closure of some parts of the Santa Fe National Forest (11); but despite the wildfire danger in the area, Gila National Forest will be open for Fourth of July (12). A small wildfire was reported in Boulder County, Colorado (13); while residents of Comanche County, Oklahoma, have been allowed to return home after a 5,000-acre wildfire forced evacuations earlier this week (14). As drought conditions persist all across Texas, even areas that seldom have wildfires are having to readjust to the threat (15); several wildfires continuing to burn in Texas' Big Country, as summarized by the next article (16); and Texas Forest Service released estimates on timber losses due to wildfires in Grimes, Trinity, and Polk Counties (17). A 100-acre wildfire was reported in Alabama's Gulf State Park (18); while North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency in 29 counties due to the extreme wildfire danger (19). A small army of 1,200 people, 148 fire engines, 125 bull dozers, and 11 helicopters from 46 states are battling wildfires in southern Georgia that have consumed over 300,000 acres so far (20); where wildfires are being blamed for more bear-auto collisions and incursions into neighborhoods (21). While water in the form of rainfall is expected to dampen blazes in Flagler County, Florida, by mid-week, many citizens and businesses have already donated 1,400 cases of water for firefighters to drink (22); however, the projected rainfall won't be enough to completely extinguish the wildfire threat across South Florida (23). Canadian wildfires continue to burn in Northeast Ontario province (24); and scorching temperatures on the Pacific island of Borneo have the Malaysian Civil Defence Department on high alert for bushfires (25). As Australia's Victorian government appears to back away from implementing all 67 recommendations of the Royal Bushfire Commission after 2009's Black Saturday bushfires, infighting within that state's government is occurring (26); raising the specter of a new bushfire class-action suit against power companies for the devastating Marysville bushfire (27); while the costly issue of putting Victoria's powerlines underground is reexamined by the next article (28). And finally, some Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters have a very long bike trip in their future!
