A US Geological Survey study published in the Journal of Herpetology shows that wildfires which burned 380,000 acres in San Diego County severely impacted a number of animal species that lived in the area (1). A 1,600-acre wildfire that burned in Douglas County, Colorado, forcing the evacuation of 10,000 homeowners, is now 70% contained (2); while one Colorado state senator is lobbying for more federal funds for wildfire fighting in that state in what could be a long and intense wildfire season due to below-average snowfall (3); the following article questioning the wisdom of the US Forest Service policy to let many wildfires burn (4). A tally of wildfires across Texas, where 26 fires burned 874 acres yesterday, is provided by the next item (5); while Wildfire NOTD subscriber Chuck Bushey, President of the International Association of Wildland Fire, sent along a press release about the screening of the classic 1952 smokejumper movie "Red Skies of Montana" as part of the IAWF's 2011 Wildfire Safety Summit in Missoula, Montana, April 5th (6). A wildfire in Pickens County, Georgia, which burned 780 acres is now considered 80% contained (13); where firefighters battled three major wildfires that scorched 53 mi.² as of yesterday (14); and wildfire smoke made breathing difficult (15); while the Red Cross assisted homeowners displaced by the blazes (16); and the governor declared a state of emergency in four counties (17). Firefighters in Brevard County, Florida, kept a close eye on the remains of a 160-acre marsh fire that was 80% contained (18); where a 250-acre wildfire that surrounded a regional airport in North Okaloosa Fire District yesterday is now 60% contained (19). An Op-Ed piece from the Huffington Post laments the environmental damage being done by a wildfire that has burned some 2,000 acres in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (20).
