WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 121810
First up today, Wildfire NOTD subscriber and photographer Mike Meadows sent along a link to a treasure-trove of photos he's shot of both wildfires and structure fires over a 25-year career (1). The U.S. Forest Service held a meeting at Southern California's Descanso Gardens in La Canada/Flintridge to unveil their three-year plan for replanting 4,200 acres a year of Station Fire burn areas (2); but with a forecast of several inches of rain in the San Gabriel Mountains this weekend, Los Angeles County Public Works Department may recommend some road closures due to runoff from areas burned in that fire (3). San Diego Gas & Electric will be getting a financial windfall after the California Public Utilities Commission approved rate increases to help it pay for costly wildfire insurance (4). Prescribed burns are being recommended for areas in New York State's Shawangunk Mountains to help boost the ecology of the region (5); meanwhile, Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park will have a new addition in the form of a fire lookout tower being restored by preservationists (6). Israel's Carmel Forest Fire has claimed another victim, number 44, as a firefighter who was severely burned has succumbed to his injuries (7); while air-tankers saw some action outside of Perth, Western Australia, as a raging bushfire sliced across Karnup's Rockingham Lakes Regional Park (8). And finally, we finish with a video segment sent by Wildfire NOTD subscriber and professional writer Sue Russell about a Texas arsonist who is a bit odd in his style of dress at the fires he sets!
