WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 112610

A $500,000 wildfire mitigation grant awarded by the Arizona State Forester's Office will allow residents of Show Low to clear 450 acres of hazardous vegetation (1); while firefighters from all over Sevier County, Tennessee, battled a wildfire that forced the evacuation of dozens of homes (2). The Pennsylvania Game Commission will be igniting 29 acres in a controlled burn which will be overseen by the Nature Conservancy (3); and residents of North Saanich, British Columbia, will have an opportunity to discuss wildfire hazard zones with fire officials November 30th (4). Another warning from Fire and Emergency Service Authority about a bad bushfire season being ahead focused on Western Australia's rural areas (5); while the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority has made an additional $700,000 available to residents of Yarra Valley to aid in reconstruction (6). And finally, a Spanish forest fire protection agency won an award for their service to the community, although the name of the award could probably have been a little more prestigious than "Golden Fire Swatter"!
