A wildfire along Southern California's 405 freeway burned about 8 acres over the weekend (1); while Orange County Fire Authority battled a 10-acre wildfire that briefly threatened homes in Yorba Linda (2); and CAL FIRE firefighters battled a 65-acre wildfire near Mt. San Jacinto (3). CAL FIRE firefighters also extinguished a 20-acre wildfire sparked by a traffic collision in San Diego's East County (4); however, firefighters are continuing to let wildfires burn in the Sierra Nevada's for ecological purposes (5). Quick work by firefighters took out a wildfire in Lakeport, California, yesterday (6); while a wildfire northeast of Williams, Arizona, continues to expand (7). Firefighters in Colorado were trying to get the word out to campers to fully extinguish their campfires due to the wildfire danger (8); something underscored by the next article about a blaze burning in El Paso County (9); and a wildfire near Boulder has been reported this morning as well (10). The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, reported that this was the least active wildfire season in the past decade, citing the fact that Southern California has had an unusually mild summer (although the Santa Ana wind season has yet to begin!) (11). Local fire managers were upset with US Forest Service officials for ignoring their own wildfire behavior models prior to starting a controlled burn in Montana's Helena National Forest (12); and thunderstorms sparked a number of wildfires in South Dakota's Black Hills (13). Arkansas has several wildfires burning across the state (14); while homeowners in Jackson County, Florida, will receive pointers from the Florida Division of Forestry on protecting their homes from wildfires at a meeting on Tuesday (15). Wildfires were reported in Spain, Portugal, southern France, and Albania in Europe, and a slew of new ones brewed up in Algeria, North Africa (16); while a forest fire near Israel's Sea of Galilee was apparently sparked by a recycling plant nearby (17). Heads were rolling in Russia's Volgograd region after a poor performance by fire agencies in recent wildfires (18); but Russia has dispatched several aerial assets to assist Serbia in fighting wildfires (19). Fraser Coast's 2010 wildfire plan is being scrutinized by Queensland, Australia, officials prior to acceptance (20).
