As Wildfire News Of The Day begins, CAL FIRE has announced that they will start inspecting properties along the Central Coast in regards to wildfire danger beginning April 1st (1); and US Forest Service will conduct controlled burns in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in Nevada over the next few days (2). The Bureau of Land Management is predicting a shorter fire season in Arizona due to higher-than-average precipitation throughout the state this year (3). A coalition of organizations is raising $4 million to clean up the Hayman Fire burn area in Colorado (4); but debris flows and erosion are problems that will persist for a while, as a follow-on article shows (5). Maine Forest Service is warning residents of heightened fire danger in parts of that state due to an early warming trend (6); while the next article takes a look at the impact of New York's outdoor burn ban in light of a sobering figure: they start 40% of the wildfires in that state! (7) Firefighters scrambled to contain a wildfire that burned on Hawaii's Big Island near Kawaihae Village yesterday (8); and a lack of precipitation in the Canadian province of Ontario has fire officials worried that it may be a very active fire season ahead (9). Political leaders in the Philippines are calling on local governments to do more to reduce forest fires, providing millions of pesos in financial support (10); while fire authorities on the Malaysian portion of the island of Borneo plan to improve their infrastructure for fighting wildfires, including erecting lookout towers, increasing air patrols, and building water basins (11). Heading Down Under, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver feted residents of one badly-hit Black Saturday town to a very loooong lunch! (12) A Western Australia community is threatened by a bushfire sparked by a motorcycle crash (13); and a house in that state sustained heavy damage from a bushfire that drew the attention of dozens of firefighters and a trio of heli-tankers (14). And finally, a volunteer firefighter from Indiana got the shock of his life when his pager identified the scene of his next incident as a very familiar address: his own!
