WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 101009

First up in Wildfire News Of The Day, although the Sheep Fire is not fully contained yet, restoration of the areas burned has already begun; followed by an article about a seldom-seen side of firefighting - local residents providing support to firefighters at the fire camp. Burn areas in Southern California are bracing for the first significant rain of the season; even as homeowners who face the prospect of mudslides when the rains arrive put more faith in easy-to-acquire sandbags than in harder-to-acquire flood insurance! A journalist who warned of the dangers of allowing hillside home development comments on who he feels is really responsible for the devastation of the Station Fire. San Diego, which has seen wildfires that required a superhero to tame them, will now be protected by an S-64E helicopter dubbed "the Incredible Hulk" furnished by Erickson Aircrane, courtesy of San Diego Gas & Electric, as told in the next three articles; while representatives of CAL FIRE discuss their massive-response strategy in dealing with wildfires in northern San Diego County. US Forest Service firefighters will begin control burns in Central California's Eldorado National Forest today; but a number of wildfires cropped up in Lake County late this week; and CAL FIRE reported a couple of blazes in Northern California today. US Forest Service fire managers in the Kaibab National Forest have apologized to the residents of Williams, Arizona, over letting a prescribed burn get out of hand; while fire managers in Arizona's Tonto National Forest plan to begin prescribed burns later this month (let's hope they keep these under control). One of the originators of Landfire, a multiagency program that maps vegetation across the United States for wildfire purposes, earned an award. Heading Down Under, at least one community in Victoria, Australia, is already making preparations for bushfire season; but another article gripes about the sluggish rebuilding pace in that state nine months after the Black Saturday bushfires. The new fire warning system and rules of engagement for residents of Victoria in future bushfires are discussed in the next article. Homeowners in New South Wales who have pools in their backyard will be able to post a "static water source" sign on their fence, indicating that firefighters can tap that water source in a bushfire, something which may save that home; and in an initiative that will launch a thousand safe havens, New South Wales will be selecting sites all over that state in which people can shelter from bushfires. A bushfire along New South Wales' Gold Coast has been contained. As the inquest into the death of three truckers in West Australia continues, drivers have recommended that officials should broadcast bushfire warnings over the UHF frequencies used by truckers. An insurance company provides some useful tips to residents of Queensland to cut down on the bushfire danger, as well as pointers on how to evacuate. And finally, think twice before participating in that TV spot while fighting a fire - the stunt could be more dangerous than it looked!
