After proving their worth on wildfires in San Diego County last year, it looks like funding to bring CL-415s back again this year has dried up; and, due to funding shortages, Santa Maria Air Attack Base operations are being scaled back in California. Like child predators, many feel that arsonists should also be identified and tracked, as an LA Times article details. Nevada firefighters are deploying hundreds of sheep to reduce the fire hazard on hillsides in that state; and Gila National Forest in New Mexico has been having a bad time with human-caused wildfires. They're having a hot time of it in Texas, as the next five articles show (an executive from Fort Worth-based ExxonMobil told me today that they could smell wildfire smoke even that far away from the fires); and Oklahoma had some as well, as explained in the next two. A small wildfire was sparked by another fallen power line, this time in Massachusetts; and in a state that sees over 1,000 acres burned every year, Connecticut is warning residents about fire danger. Firefighters from several departments helped knock down a wildfire in North Carolina yesterday; but Hernando County, Florida, is seeing a major increase in acreage burned by wildfires this year. Incorporating the latest technological advances, a wildfire center will be constructed in British Columbia, Canada, in 2010; and Cuban Forest Rangers are celebrating an anniversary. Don't plan on moving to Victoria's Yarra Valley anytime soon - housing prices are skyrocketing due to a shortage of homes after the bushfires there.
