WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 012309

The long-awaited trial of Raymond Lee Oyler, the man accused of starting the Esperanza Fire that resulted in the deaths of five USFS personnel, is finally underway. In an Op-Ed from the Los Angeles Times, the President of the International Association of Firefighters weighs in on both the 'stay and defend' debate and the usefulness of contract firefighters. Three articles (including one from LA Time's Bettina Boxall) cite a recent study on climate change and its effect on Global Warming. A couple of wildfires in West Texas have wrought destruction and burned thousands of acres there, as recounted in the next story. Malaysia becomes the first Southeast Asian country to procure CL-415 aircraft for both maritime and firefighting duty, and it comes none too soon, with wildfires already smoking up the air in that region, as related by the next two stories. Forest owners in Australia are concerned about whether they will have enough volunteer firefighters to fight forest fires there, and a couple of youngsters are in trouble with the law due to sparking a bushfire with fireworks. Bushfires in West Australia and New South Wales are causing problems for firefighters, as detailed by the next two articles, while fire authorities in South Australia are caught in a dilemma over sirens. And finally, another story that shows that firefighters don't just rescue humans threatened by fires.
