Although not technically wildfire news, I was encouraged to share an article from my Military.com column about San Diego Fire-Rescue Department's Air Ops (which does fight wildfires). Also in San Diego, Supervisor Ron Roberts, who was a prominent government voice during the 2007 wildfires there, may quit before his term expires. With echoes to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Santa Barbara City Council will vote this week on allowing families whose homes burned in the Tea Fire to live in trailers for up to two years while their homes are rebuilt. An Op-Ed from a retired USFS ranger in Northern California sounds a ringing denunciation of USFS fire suppression in that area, while Aero Union, purveyor of several heavy air tankers to fire agencies, has expanded to larger quarters in Chico. Arizona fire managers will take advantage of favorable conditions to conduct a couple of prescribed burns to help prevent major blazes in the area in the future. Moving to technology, a podcast associated with the next article reports on a satellite system that spots wildfires from space, then provides the data to fire managers via e-mail or other means for rapid response to otherwise undetected wildfires. Oklahoma firefighters had their hands full with wind-driven grassfires over the weekend, and firefighters on Texas' Padre Island had their own wildfire challenges during that time as well. Florida firefighters are tallying up the costs residents will have to pay if they allow fires to get out of control, but also provide tips to help prevent that from happening. Firefighters in South Africa reported fires in the mountains above Cape Town this weekend, and something unusual out of Australia: fireworks being used to celebrate Christmas started a bushfire. And finally, the bear cub rescued from the Northern California wildfires earlier this year and dubbed 'L'il Smoky' is preparing for a long winter's nap.
