WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 110508

Wildfire news was a bit light today, no doubt in part due to media fascination with the elections. As anticipated, San Diego's Proposition A failed to get the two-thirds vote needed to enact it, as our first two articles today show, which may put the Super Scooper lease for next year in jeopardy. Lawsuits against SDG&E and Cox Communications over the 2007 wildfires in San Diego County have been clarified as to dollar amount being sought in three civil suits, but at least the utilities avoided any criminal charges. Coloradoans are happy for some snowfall, especially when it snuffs out a fire in the Rockies. Folks in Arkansas got an education on the finer points of controlled burns in their area, while residents of Kentucky and Texas got an education in the wilder version, as the two following articles show. Ontario, Canada, reported on a milder fire season than anticipated, as seems to have been the case in much of Canada this year, but Australians are just into bushfire season and it's shaping up to be anything but mild, as the next article shows. Two possible solutions to bushfire problems (and wildfire problems elsewhere in the world) are presented last: aerial inspection of power lines with computer-linked cameras; and special windows and doors designed to resist the radiant heat of bushfires, from the ever-innovative folks down under.
