WILDFIRE NEWS OF THE DAY - 092308

Leading off today's wildfire news, two articles submitted by San Diego FD Deputy Chief Brian Fennessy on the MOU with CalFire that allows San Diego aircraft to fight fires on state land at night, and some video of what it looks like to be flying night ops. Lest we forget, California is not the only state bracing for a fall wildfire season, as the next article from West Virginia shows. AB2447 is becoming a political hot potato, it appears, while Oregon fire crews are being assisted by better weather. Weather notwithstanding, fire crews are still battling wildfires in Oregon, as demonstrated by the next two articles. Farm country has its share of out-of-control fires, as the next article shows, and the Forest Supervisor in Lake Tahoe weighs in on wildfires. An important meeting going on in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, right now is unveiling a new form of forest management called Appropriate Management Response (AMR) that has been under wraps for awhile and is something which will probably be getting more press in the future. A study of wildfire activity that spans two millennia was just published in Nature Geoscience, as noted by an article from the Los Angeles Times Blog. Overseas (really, way down south), Peru is having their share of headaches due to forest fires as their wildfire season is beginning early.
