Honest Tea joined with the National Forest Foundation to unveil a program called "Bag to Tree" which aims to plant thousands of trees in areas burned by wildfires all over the US (1); and they could have more land to replant in the future, as fire authorities feel that it could be a very active wildfire season in Cochise County, Arizona, this year (2). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Dan Ware, Fire Information Officer for New Mexico State Forestry, provided some details about a 2,700-acre wildfire burning near Veguita which is now 50% contained (3); while a 10,000-acre blaze that burned outside of Ruidoso reached 35% containment (4); current conditions prompting fire authorities in the Lincoln National Forest to impose Stage Two Fire Restrictions tomorrow (5). A Colorado teenager has admitted starting a wildfire that caused the evacuation of several homes in late February (6); while a 15-acre wildfire threatened homes in La Plata County (7); and an increase in wind speed caused a wildfire that has burned 5 mi.² outside of Fort Collins to flare up again (8). Wildfire NOTD subscriber Ray Rasker, Executive Director of Headwaters Economics, is quoted in an article that discusses the reasons behind the increasing costs associated with fighting wildfires in the Rocky Mountains (9). Firefighters in Oklahoma had to call in Tulsa Police Department's helicopter to keep track of a wildfire burning near the city (10); and a Creek County fire chief hitched a ride with a news helicopter to survey blazes in his area (11); while firefighters battled three wildfires in Grady County, two of which were apparently arson jobs (12); as numerous wildfires cropped up across the state yesterday (13); and the fire weather watch was extended for the southern part of the state (14); wildfires being worsened by a drought that is the worst since the Dust Bowl (15). Firefighters battled a wildfire outside of Houston, Texas (16); but firefighters were able to keep a 200-acre wildfire away from homes outside of Abilene (17); while a wildfire that started in Mexico crossed the border into South Texas near Laredo, destroying several structures (18); windy, dry conditions exacerbating the wildfire danger across North and Central Texas (19); and the Texas Forest Service indicated that the wildfire danger across much of that state will continue until early next week (20). Fire crews extinguished numerous wildfires apparently sparked by passing trains outside of St. Paul, Minnesota (21); while sparks from a burn barrel apparently ignited a field fire which destroyed a barn in northern Iowa (22). Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is concerned about the wildfire hazard for that state despite recent rain (23); and Lake County Forest Preserve District is kicking off a series of controlled burns in Illinois (24); while high winds and low humidity prompted the Arkansas Forestry Commission to impose Red Flag restrictions across the state (25). A college in Ontario, Canada, will offer SP-100 Forest Fire Fighting training courses for firefighter recruits towards the end of this month (26). An 80-acre wildfire with suspicious origins was reported in St. Croix, Virgin Islands (27); meanwhile, a new partnership to tackle wildfires in the Mediterranean which annually cost an estimated €1 billion was announced at the 2nd Mediterranean Forest Week conference being held in Avignon, France (28). Seven people who wanted to cause mass casualties by igniting a wildfire at a religious ceremony in Imphal, India, have been apprehended by authorities (29); and a wildfire was reported in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra State (30). A wind-driven wildfire burned 25 acres outside of Trashigang, Bhutan (31); while a wildfire that destroyed one home and damaged four others in the foothills of Perth, Western Australia, was apparently deliberately set (32). And finally, a lucky kitty who survived a Victorian bushfire has finally found a new home!
